WHAT IS MENTAL HEALTH OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY?

Mental Health Occupational Therapists work together with the person to identify what impacts on day-to-day functioning and how achieve a more fulfilling life.  They draw on a range of psycholgocal and occupational therapies to help patients improve performance  and tackle challenges they face in everyday life.  Mental Health Occupational Therapists complete university training via a number of different pathways and have completed training in the talking therapies such as CBT, and ACT and can gain accreditation for facilitating programs such as the  Study Without Stress Program.  The Occupational Therapy Australia association provides a code of ethics and continuing professional education.  Occupational Therapists are registered with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

Mental Health Occupational Therapists specialise in support for conditions such as ADHD, Autism, Anxiety, and Depression.  They can assist with practical solutions to improve sleep hygiene, productivity, communication skills, and time management.  Conflict resolution, stress management and support for life transitions are also an essential part of the support delivered in Mental Health Occupational Therapy.

Often the diagnosis of ADHD or Autism can feel overwhelming for patients and families.  A Mental Health Occupational Therapist can help with understanding the symptoms and challenges of these neurotypes, but also work to maximse the strengths of the young person and increase their self-esteem.

In ADHD the building of personalised routines, focusing on time management prioritisation, finding environmental modifications, developing emotional regulation and coping strategies, building executive functioning skills, and working with schools and families to increase understanding of the needs of the young person can all be addressed in working with a Mental Health Occupational Therapist.
